KAMPALA- National Unity Platform (NUP) President Bobi Wine has vowed to take legal action against specific police officers who he claims were responsible for injuring him and his team during a confrontation in Bulindo, Kira Municipality.

Wine suffered a leg injury after being hit by a teargas canister and received medical attention at St. Francis Hospital Nsambya. He condemned the excessive use of force and systemic human rights abuses perpetrated by the police, particularly targeting his camp.

“The canister exploded on my leg, shattering my shoe, harming me very badly. I must say I am just a lucky man, because in the presidential campaign, another canister missed me and caught a lady called Zubedda, who lost her leg. Same canister which was thrown at a medical student at Makerere University and he lost his hand.” Kyagulanyi noted.

Wine named specific police officers, including Kira Division Police Commander Robert Kuzara, whom he claims targeted his life. He expressed skepticism about the police’s ability to conduct an impartial investigation into the incident, citing their own involvement.

“How can the Police investigate itself? Their Spokesperson has already come out lying broad-day that i fell down, while getting out of the car. I will not go to the police to report, but we will take individual police officers to court. Because we have evidence in our hands.” Kyagulanyi said.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident, but Wine has little hope for disciplinary action against the errant officers, citing the regime’s history of rewarding high-ranking security officials implicated in brutality against civilians.

“The regime is rewarding security officials well known that they are notorious criminals who have been participating in violent actions against civilians, including Frank Mwesigwa and Enock Abaine. This shows that Museveni is thanking them for their actions that are already on record.” Kyagulanyi added.

Despite the alleged violent crackdown, NUP Spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi reaffirmed the party’s commitment to its quest for a free Uganda and announced plans for nationwide tours once Wine’s health permits.
