NEWS- Stephen Tibihikira, a Kagadi district local government driver, is in custody at the Kagadi central police station for knocking a protester dead on Monday morning. He was arrested on Tuesday morning in Kagadi town.
He is accused of knocking dead Magezi Tumuhaise 25, a boda boda rider and resident of Rwensonzi cell in Kayanja parish, Mahirirwe sub county of Kagadi district. The incident happened on Monday morning.
The Albertine regional police spokesperson Allan Julius Hakiza said Tumuhaise who was knocked dead was part of a group of residents of Kagadi who were protesting the sorry state of Muhorro-Ndaiga Road.
He added that the vehicle involved in the accident has also been impounded.
During the protest in Muhorro town council, a double cabin belonging to the district health department and carrying the LC5 chairperson, Yosia Ndibwami ran over one of the protesters before continuing with its journey at break-neck speed.
The video has since gone viral on social media, with a number of people calling for the arrest of the perpetrators.
Hakiiza commended the vigilant residents who captured the video that is now aiding the investigations.
He however urged members of the public to always seek intervention from authorities for amicable solutions to their issues rather than resorting to protests.
Meanwhile the police mouthpiece also confirmed the arrest of 12 ring leaders of the demonstration who were apprehended last night.
He however concealed the suspects’ identities for fear of jeopardizing investigations but says will be arraigned in court and charged.
