The Prosecution presented 70 counts of manslaughter and 22 counts of causing grievous harm against the three officials who were responsible for overseeing operations at the Kitezi landfill which happened on August 10th 2024 when over 35 people were killed.

They are also accused of ignoring multiple warnings about the imminent risk of a disaster, including the potential for a garbage slide, and failing to decommission the landfill or take action to protect nearby communities.

The charges further allege that the officials did not evacuate or warn residents of the impending dangers nor take timely steps to address the potential risk of loss of life and these omissions and acts of negligence, directly contributed to the disaster that caused both fatalities and injuries and all the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The case has attracted significant public attention, with the tragic Kitezi landfill slide highlighting broader concerns about waste management and accountability in Kampala.
