KABALE- The family of the late Meresi Kateryeba joined Christians at St. Mudesita Catholic Church in Kekubo, Kabale Municipality, to commemorate her legacy. The event, held on Wednesday January 1, 2025, aimed to honor Kateryeba’s memory and continue her work.

Kateryeba, who passed away on November 27, 2024, had a tradition of hosting an annual Thanksgiving ceremony to raise funds for the construction of the church. Her children, led by Sophia Kyarimpa, who is aspiring for the Rubanda District Woman MP seat in 2026, vowed to continue her legacy.

According to Kyarimpa, her mother’s dream was to leave a lasting legacy in the church, but unfortunately, she passed away before fulfilling it. To honor her memory, the family and the church community raised over UGX 1 million to support the church’s construction.

Kyarimpa pledged to continue hosting the Thanksgiving ceremony annually until the church is complete. The event also featured the baptism of Kateryeba’s daughter-in-law and grandchildren, which she had promised to have baptized before her passing.

As the aspirant Woman MP for Rubanda District, Kyarimpa challenged the locals to work hard in the new year to achieve their goals. She emphasized the importance of education and urged parents to prioritize their children’s education for a better tomorrow.

Kyarimpa also encouraged the public to embrace government programs aimed at eradicating poverty within communities. Rev. Fr. Prosper Turyahabwe, a formator at St. Charles Lwanga Seminary Nyakibale in Rukungiri district, presided over the mass.

Fr. Turyahabwe challenged Christians to focus on making 2025 a successful year, rather than dwelling on past failures. He expressed concern over some Christians being overtaken by earthly pleasures, using festival seasons and new year celebrations as opportunities to commit sin through excessive drinking and infidelity, rather than turning back to Jesus Christ.
