As deadline looms with just five days remaining out of 15 days to enforce the directives to restore trade order in Rubaare town council politicians and activists stepped in to back the traders on extension of deadline date to enforce the directives as traders prepare to relocate their businesses.
The move comes after business community led by their chairperson Fred Muhinda who wrote to the Rubaare town clerk requesting for additional time to give room to traders to prepare where to relocate.
The letter dated 7th April contained three reasons, extension of enforcement date to 1st July to give ample time to the affected traders to relocate to the new gazetted premises, to provide gazetted areas for all daily traders and a sensitization meeting with business community and land owners for proper arrangement as per physical planning of the town.
Mr Ambrose Kyenjoga an activists also the director MAWAZO ENDELEVU INITIATIVE a non-governmental organization expressed his concern over a short time given to traders to relocate their businesses in unknown destinations, stressing that these traders some have paid taxes to council and rent to the owners of containers where they have been operating from.
He added that perhaps the traders have to heed to the directives to restore trade order and government policies, the government should consider them with lenient measures because they have been contributing much in local revenue collections.
The Councilor representing Rubaare town council, Mwesigwa Chrispus reverberate the activist’s sentiment calling on government to first weigh the contribution done by the affected traders in the development of town council before evicting them.
Currently in Uganda authorities from cities, municipalities and town councils are implementing directives from the government of restoring trade order where temporary structures, makeshifts, containers and kiosks are being demolished and eviction of traders operating on walkways, verandas, behind the permanent building and other undesignated areas.
