NEWS- The Rukiga district woman Member of Parliament Hon Kamusiime Caroline Muhwezi has raised a red flag on stigmatization of People with Disabilities PWDS by parents and while accessing Government services.
Hon Kamusiime revealed this while donating 20 wheelchairs worth Ugx 10m to People with Disabilities from Rwamucucu Sub County Rukiga district.
Speaking to our reporter after the donation exercise, Kamusiime showed concern on how the PWDS are set apart everywhere stressing that it’s so unfortunate that some parents who have PWDs in their families don’t want them to play with other children in the community.
The Legislator said that before she started donating wheelchairs, most of the parents never wanted the PWDS to socialize with the entire community, Education Centres, Health facilities, Churches among others.
The Caretakers of the PWDS Kiiza Harriet, Safari Baker son of James Kiiza whose father suffered stroke from Rugarama Village, Kitojo Parish Rwamucucu Sub County, Beyanga Edison from Burime parish from Rwamucucu and Natukunda Beyanga from Nozi Hamuruka said the situation would become worse when it rains.
They added that carrying PWDs has been a challenge and some of them would be taken by running water in case it rained when other family members were still in the gardens.
The caretakers further commended the Rukiga district Woman legislator for reducing the burden of carrying them saying the PWDs are going to start attending churches, Health centres, Markets and other public places
Eddie Mugisha, the Rwamucucu Sub county Chairman said that some PWDs have been unable to move themselves from one place and that they are suffering from all the weather conditions.
Kubiriba Fred the chairperson of the PWDs Rwamucucu Sub county and Tumwakiire Matthew, the Nozi parish councilor who doubles as the Deputy speaker of Rwamucucu sub county applauded the woman MP upon her donations and support in the community.
