The Permanent Secretary in the Ministryo of Health Dr Diana Atwine has disclosed that Uganda has not recorded any new confirmed case of Ebola since Monday however, the total number of contacts of the confirmed cases have increased and most of these contacts are health workers.
Dr Atwine made the remarks today while updating the media on the current Ebola status in the country and said that the total number of cases stand at seven with one death.
She said that following the escalating Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and increased cross-border movement risks, the National Task Force on Ebola Response has announced the new immediate measures to stop the spread of the disease.
She said that Uganda has temporarily closed its border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and only authorized Ebola response teams, humanitarian operations, food/cargo transport, and essential security personnel will be allowed entry under strict health screening protocols.
Dr Atwine also said that all authorized travelers from the Democratic Republic of Congo will undergo mandatory health screening, documentation, locator form completion and continuous monitoring at entry points.
She made it categorically clear that anyone returning from the Democratic Republic of Congo into Uganda must undergo 21 days of mandatory self-isolation under Ministry of Health supervision and schools in border districts will remain open but must strictly follow Ministry of Health Ebola Standard Operating Procedures and learners returning from the Congo must have daily temperature monitoring for 21 days.
Resident District Commissioners are directed to enforce all Ebola prevention and control guidelines and Media houses are required to dedicate daily prime-time programming to Ebola awareness, prevention and reporting.
