MBARARA- Health experts have cautioned mothers who leave their children under the full care of housemaids.
This was revealed on Wednesday during the media café which was held at Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital Organized by the Health Journalist Network of Uganda in Nyamitanga Mbarara City.
Facilitating the café Dr. Mike Kyiwalyanga a pediatrician doctor at Holy Innocents Hospital said that it would be paramount to understand the health status of the housemaids parents use in their homes to safeguard the health of their children.
He said that most parents do not bother testing these house helps whom they leave their babies with.
“We have registered cases where parents are negative and their children are positive, this happens at home because you are not aware of the status of someone you employed so we recommend parents to test these maids before employing them”.
“We have taken it for granted not knowing that we are risking our babies to getting HIV but when you are aware that this person is sick at least you can be careful around them most mothers are not so sensitive with their babies”.
Mr. Fredrick Kamugisha the Mbarara District Health Educator asked parents to test strangers and even relatives they bring into their home as a precaution.
“I want to call upon all parents to ensure they know the health status of the people they invite into their homes; we have had cases where maids have transmitted HIV to children of their bosses”.
