NEWS– The Police in Kampala are hunting for a group of gang members moving on motorcycles that were captured in a CCTV video assaulting an Indian National before grabbing his bag on Kampala Road.
Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire has identified the victim as Joshi Keshav, a 32-year-old Indian national and tour and travel company operator based at Crown House, Kampala Road.
CCTV footage shows the victim on a motorcycle carrying a bag when he was cornered by several riders due to heavy traffic. The assailants proceeded to beat and rob him.
In his statements to police, the victim said the thugs’ stolen items include a laptop valued at UGX 2.2 million, cash amounting to UGX 150,000, an Ecobank debit card, and keys.
Owoyesigyire says a team of investigators have gathered numerous clues to aid in the ongoing efforts to apprehend the suspects involved in this crime.
“A team of investigators is diligently tracing Mr. Keshav’s movements from the start of his journey to the location of the incident. Numerous clues have been gathered to aid in the ongoing efforts to apprehend the suspects involved in this crime.” Owoyesigyire said.
There has been a wave of violent attacks by gangs that target members of the public walking on foot. The gangs in groups approach their victims from behind and then strike them with flying kicks or by boxing before robbing them.
In other incidents, the gang pretends to be boda-boda riders and carry the passenger while communicating to their colleagues, who follow them before robbing the unsuspecting passengers in the night.
At least 30 criminal gang members suspected to be behind the wave of violent attacks in Kampala Metropolitan Areas were arrested by Flying Squad and Crime Intelligence, charged and remanded to Luzira prison.
