President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has recommend concesus based approach for critical leadership positions like Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament as opposed to divisive ways of campaigning, voting and unnecessary lobbying.

President Museveni notes that consensus approach grants the opportunity to asses candidates’ leadership qualities and ideological acquittance and reminded leaders to be disciplined and committed to serve their electorate for development and socialeconomic transformation.

President Museveni made the remarks today while addressing the first meeting of the National Resistance Movement Parliamentary Caucus that took place at State House Entebbe where he cautioned the Members of Parliament against self destructive politics of sectarianism based on tribes, religion and gender chauvinism.

President Museveni told the Members of Parliament to focus diagnosis and prescription of cure to societal problems affecting their electorate especially poverty eradication.

He explained that government has deliberately undertaken poverty eradication plans campaign through a vast range of programs including the Parish Development Model Initiative where over 500 million shillings has so far been disbursed to all parishes countrywide.

The President guided Members of Parliament to conven meetings for their respective Parish chiefs to evaluate performance of Parish Development Model and wealth creation initiatives in their areas as part of their mandate towards poverty eradication.

He advised newly elected Members of Parliament to concentrate on undertaking actual wealth creation initiatives for their people as opposed to endless benchmarking trips abroad that are unyielding.

He cited several success stories of wealth creation and mentioned the key sectors and enterprises for wealth creation and urged leaders to lead by example to their electorate and re-affirmed fish farming interventions for communities living near wetlands

President Museveni has cautioned mps against using their salaries for political mobilization but rather guide the electorate on proper utilisation of government social empowerment funds and initiatives and called on the MPs to avoid debts.

President Museveni castigated the National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kygulanyi Ssentamu for diverting youths into destructive politics instead of encouraging them to embrace government programs of wealth creation.

Earlier the National Resistance Movement Parliamentary Caucus unanimously resolved to support West Budama Member of Parliament Hon Jacob Marksons Oboth Oboth and Ruhinda North County Mp Thomas Tayebwa for positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament Parliament respectively.

West Budama Member of Parliament, Hon Jacob Marksons Oboth Oboth is the outgoing Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs while Ruhinda North County Member of Parliament Hon Thomas Tayebwa is the incumbent Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

The National Resistance Movement Secretary General Hon Richard Todwong announced to the fully attended NRM Parliamentary Caucus held at State House Entebbe that two aspirants quit the speakership race in favor of Hon Oboth Oboth and these include Masindi District Woman Member of Parliament Hon Florence Asiimwe Akiiki and Aringa South Member of Parliament Hon Alioni Yorke Odria.

Hon Todwong also announced that 15 contenders for Deputy speakership bowed out of the race during their interaction with the NRM Centeral Executive Committee.

These include Terego District Woman MP Rose Obiga, Omoro district Woman MP Catherine Lamwaka, Mawokota South MP Suzan Nakawuuki, Mwenge South MP Kuteesa Mary Kamuli, Oyam South MP Patrick Ogwang Obura, Kinkizi West MP James Ruugi Kaberuka, Buyaga West MP Dennis Namara, Mbale City Woman MP Lydia Wanyoto, Jinja District Woman MP Peace Tibyaze, Entebbe Municipality MP Steven Shyaka Gasheija, Kyaka South MP Jackson Kafuuzi, Bukwo district Woman MP Evelyn Chelangat, Ik county MP Hillary Lokwang, Agago County MP Edward Makmot and Rukungiri Municipality MP Lt Gen. Hon Todwong has rallied all NRM Party members members to support by voting the two Party bearers in tomorrow’s speakership elections in Parliament

The NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr Tanga Odoi moved the election process involving the 372 NRM MPs present that unanimously adopted the two names of candidates vetted and approved by the party’s Centeral Executive Committee.
