Dr Elisa Rutahigwa at NRM EC Headquarters

KAMPALA– Hon. Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa, the current Member of Parliament for Rukungiri Municipality, officially picked up his nomination forms today as he embarks on his campaign for a second term in the upcoming 2026 elections. The nomination took place at the Kyadondo NRM Electoral Commission headquarters, marking the beginning of his bid to continue serving his constituents.

Dr. Rutahigwa, who first won the seat in 2021, has made significant strides during his tenure, focusing on various development projects aimed at improving the quality of life for the residents of Rukungiri Municipality. One of his flagship achievements is the ongoing upgrade of the district hospital. The enhancements include the establishment of a modern theatre and maternity ward, among other critical healthcare facilities. This initiative has been pivotal in addressing the healthcare needs of the community, ensuring that residents have access to quality medical services.

In addition to healthcare, Dr. Rutahigwa has prioritized education within the municipality. He has initiated refurbishments at several local schools, including Makobore High School and St. Gerard’s Secondary School. These upgrades aim to create a conducive learning environment, emphasizing the importance of quality education in fostering the growth and development of the youth in the area.

Transportation infrastructure has also been a focal point of Rutahigwa’s tenure. He has worked diligently on numerous road networks, significantly improving connectivity within the municipality. However, he acknowledges that there are still several roads that require attention. His vision for the next term includes further enhancements to the road network, with specific projects like the Uganda Cities and Municipalities Infrastructure Development- UCMID Road upgrade to facilitate better transportation options for the residents.

Another key area of focus for Rutahigwa is the modification and upgrading of the Rukungiri Main Stadium. This project aims to create a modern sports facility that can host various events, promoting sports and community engagement within the municipality. Rutahigwa believes that improving sports infrastructure will not only benefit local athletes but also attract regional events that can boost local tourism and business.

Electricity access remains a pressing issue in Rukungiri Municipality. Dr. Rutahigwa has been proactive in addressing this challenge, noting that designs for electrification have already been completed by officials from the Ministry of Energy. He expressed confidence that soon, all areas within the municipality will be connected to the power grid, enhancing productivity and quality of life for residents.

Moreover, Rutahigwa is keen on lobbying for the construction of a modern Rukungiri Central Market also under UCMID. This initiative aims to provide local vendors with a structured marketplace that can enhance trade and provide better facilities for commerce. A well-planned market will not only benefit local traders but also improve the overall economic landscape of the municipality.

As he campaigns for re-election, Dr. Rutahigwa reflects on his journey since he unseated the Forum for Democratic Change’s candidate, Dr. Wallen Nuwagaba, in the 2021 elections. His track record of service and commitment to community development resonates with many voters, and he is determined to build on the progress he has already made.

The nomination window for NRM aspirants seeking to contest in the 2026 elections opened on Monday and will remain open until June 15. As Rutahigwa embarks on this new campaign, he is committed to engaging with the community, understanding their needs the more and ensuring that their voices are heard in Parliament.

With a clear agenda and a strong track record, Hon. Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa is poised to make a compelling case for his re-election, emphasizing continuity in leadership as essential for the sustained development of Rukungiri Municipality. His campaign will undoubtedly focus on the achievements of his first term while outlining ambitious plans for the future, aiming to secure the support of his constituents once again.
