Students in the University

KAMPALA- Government sponsored students at Makerere University have asked the government to allow sympathetic members of the public to generously donate food to the most vulnerable students, especially girls who are starving.

The students who are entitled to 4000 shillings daily for food are studying with hunger due to the delay by the government to release their funds, which has even caused sickness.

Some students on the government sponsorship said that the current situation of starvation at the university needs serious attention if it is to be dissolved.

Cue…………..allow the public

However, the allegations have been dismissed by the University management in a statement issued by the Dean of students Winfred Kabumbuli, saying that it is not true that students have not received  their housing  and food allowances  for the past three months.

The statements further state that it is also not true that the government has reduced the student’s welfare budget, but instead the government reduced university funding, which will affect the entire university operations.

Among other concerns raised by Students include, University denying them from cooking in Halls of residences, and banning low-cost food vendors from University but also threats of suspensions to students who speak out on grievances, but these have been dismissed in the statement.

Doctor Joel Mirembe, the General Secretary of Uganda Medical Association, said that it is unfortunate and extremely dangerous for students to be starved. He explains the health risks of not getting enough food in the body.
