ASP Elly Maate the Kigezi Region Police Public Relations Officer

The Police in Kisoro District have arrested 3 Police Officers in connection with circumstances surrounding the death a 30 year old Congolese man known as Uwimana.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate has confirmed the arrest of the 3 who were named as Cpl Musabimana Wickliffe, Police Constable Apeti Kizito and Police Constable Yebuze Moris.

This follows a case of assault by a mob that included Nsabimana John Bosco and Hakuzimana Mpunuseni that resulted in the death of Uwimana and the two have also been arrested.

It is reported that the two and others still at large assaulted Uwimana after he threatened them at a drinking place and was badly assaulted and handed over to Nyabwishenya Police Post and was accordingly charged and detained on threatening violence charges.

However, the following day he was found dead from custody and instead of informing the main District Police astation in Kisoro, the Officers together with the suspects they decided to bury him stealthily in the land of Hon Kamara during the night.

Maate explained that when the relatives of the deceased learnt about it, but when they inquired they were told that he had been released, but the Congolese organized themselves, entered Uganda and attacked the suspects demanding to know the whereabouts of their person.

The Nyabwishenya Police Officers were informed and they went and rescued the situation and still never brought it to the notice of the District Police Commander and it was the Border Internal Security Officer of Busanza, Kyaise Sowed, who picked intelligence information that the Congolese intended to attack Nyabwishenya Police station and demand for their person who alerted the DPC who immediately mobilized and visited the place for facts finding and the Police personnel there were accordingly arrested for questioning.

The scene has been visited by a team Officers from Kisoro Central Police Station, the grave of the missing person identified pending exhumation and medical examination as investigations continue.
