KANUNGU– Ugandans have been urged to generously offer help and support to the poor, vulnerable and elderly people in their areas.

The remarks were made by Betty Mutabaazi Kataba, who is eyeing the Kanungu district Woman Member of Parliament seat while speaking as the guest of honor at the handover ceremony of an assortment of items to the Kitariro Batwa Community in Buhamba village, Rutugunda parish, Kirima Sub County in Kanungu District.

The assorted items that included maize flour, soap, money and clothes among others were mobilised by Kanungu Young Generation with support from well-wishers on the Birth day of David Danson Ayebazibwe, a student of Standard high school Zzana Kampala.

Betty Mutabaazi hailed the Youths led by David Danson Ayebazibwe for coming up with the idea of giving back to the community on his birthday especially reaching out to the marginalized Batwa Community whom he described as people in need of social welfare like any other Ugandans.

Mutabaazi donated bean seedlings to this Batwa community to help them boost their food production potentials since its still a planting season and pledged more support to them.

Speaking at the same function, David Ayebazibwe said this was the third time he is visiting the Batwa community in Kitariro to share with them a little he has as a sign of love and compassion to the people considered by many Communities to be backward.

Ayebazibwe however appealed to the government and Non-Governmental organizations to always reach out to the Batwa Community so that they can also access quality Education, Health and Infrastructural services like any other Ugandans.

He added that his friends who gathered at Pathera gardens in Kampala recently raised funds which helped him to purchase the assortments to share with the Batwa hence calling upon other people to always remember the less privileged communities.

The Chairman of Kitariro Batwa Community, Geoffrey Mahano appreciated the youths for remembering them and donating items that will help their families as people who are vulnerable and marginalized.

However, Mahano noted that as a Batwa community, they are always left behind in government poverty eradication programs like currently most of them were left behind in Parish development Model and Emyooga programs.

Among the beneficiaries is a 134 year old Mzee Kafumbiri Niwagaba whom the team visited at his home.

Batwa in Kanungu District live in Kitariro, Kihembe, Kebiremu and other areas and are described by many as the internally displaced persons in Uganda as well as grouped among the most marginalized Indigenous Minority Groups in Uganda.

Some of the NGOs which include BMCT, Batwa development program, Diocese of Kinkizi among others have so far tried to improve their well-being in different ways like supporting education of their children.
