The Prime Minister Rt Hon Robinah Nabbanja has hailed the departed Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament Hon Hellen Nakimuli by recognizing her distinguished service, advocacy for Island communities, and contribution to national development.
While moving a motion in Parliament chaired by Speaker Rt Hon Anita Annet Among today afternoon to honor the late Nakimuli, Rt Hon Nabbanja described the late legislator as hardworking and deeply committed to improving the welfare of her constituents.
She was seconded by the Leader of the Opposition Rt Hon Joel Ssenyonyi who paid tribute, noting that Hon Nakimuli served Kalangala with dedication and ensured that the voices of island communities were heard despite geographical challenges.
Rt Hon Ssenyonyi further emphasized Hon Nakimuli’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and responsible governance, adding that her legacy should inspire efforts to strengthen systems and protect citizens.
While seconding the motion to eulogise the late Hon Nakimuli, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance Hon Dr Chris Baryomunsi, warned the public against celebrating the deaths of prominent individuals, describing the trend as un-Ugandan and cautioning that it could lead to stricter regulations on social media use.
Hon Baryomunsi condemned what he described as a growing culture of trolling and celebrating the deaths of leaders on social media, urging Ugandans to uphold respect and dignity even in times of loss.
Before joining Parliament in 2021, Hon Nakimuli a Member of National Unity Platform, served as a Community Development Officer in Kalangala District from 2013 to 2020 and while in Parliament, she served as Shadow Minister for Agriculture and later as Shadow Minister for ICT and Anti-Corruption and was also known for championing women’s empowerment and participating actively in sports, including captaining Parliament’s volleyball team.
In addition, Sports Minister Peter Ogwang moved a motion for the Parliamentary Commission to deduct Ugx 500,000 from each Member of Parliament to support the education of Hon Nakimuli’s daughter, a proposal that was unanimously approved and Speaker Among announced a contribution of Ugx 10 million from the National Resistance Movement towards the family of the deceased.
