President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has rallied Anglicans in Ankole Sub-region to pursue faith and economic prosperity hand in hand, as the East African Revival in Greater Ankole commemorates its 90th anniversary.
President Museveni made the remarks and reminded believers to reflect on the Biblical parable of the talents and the teachings in the Book of Genesis, where God entrusted mankind with the responsibility to multiply, develop and exercise dominion over nature.
The President pointed out that this should inspire Christians to use the talents, resources and opportunities entrusted to them to create wealth and improve their livelihoods.
The 90th anniversary of the East African Revival in Greater Ankole has been held at St James Cathedral, Ruharo in Mbarara City with five-day celebrations bring together thousands of Christians held under the theme: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever”, taken from Hebrews 13:8.
President Museveni cautioned the faithful against poverty mentality, religious sectarianism and called for unity for enhanced socioeconomic transformation efforts for all and backed the proposal to fast-track religious tourism initiatives in the Ankole Sub-region as part of efforts to promote the growth and development of the church.

The President was responding to a request by the Bishop of Ankole Diocese, the Rt Rev Sheldon Mwesigwa, who highlighted the unique religious tourism potential of the Anglican Church and the East African Revival that he says requires deliberate promotion and exposure of the region’s religious heritage to attract tourists and strengthening the church’s evangelisation and growth.
President Museveni has welcomed the proposal and pledged support towards efforts to develop and promote Ankole’s religious tourism Museum and heritage and also promised to return to Ankole in 2036 to join believers in commemorating the Centenary of the East African Revival.
President Museveni recounts on the positive impact of the East African Revival in Greater Ankole that he says countered drunkardness, superstition and witchcraft, theft, unhygienic practices and other vices and noted that the revival initiated cause for education and enlightenment of the people which led to vivid transformation of communities.
However, the President has warned against misinterpretation of the biblical scriptures in vast aspects as he mentions them as he reflected on his long-standing personal attachment to the East African Revival Movement in Greater Ankole, recalling his connection to the movement dating back more than seven decades.
President Museveni has warned against environmental degradation and wetland enchroachment in the Greater Ankole Sub region and guided that sustainable wetland use will aid irrigation for agriculture and environmental conservation.
The Minister for Internal Affairs Prof Ephraim Kamuntu hailed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for laying a strong foundation for religious growth and influence through peace, stability and good leadership and reflected on President Museveni’s leadership journey, tracing his leadership abilities back to his school days and has has evolved over the years, from a student leader to becoming Uganda’s long-serving President and assuming continental and global leadership responsibilities as Chairperson of the East African Community Heads of State Summit and the Non-Aligned Movement as evidence of the leadership experience.
Bishop Sheldon Mwesigwa noted that the East African Revival in Greater Ankole Diocese has significantly impacted people’s transformation including youths, created awareness and solutions to challenges in that area, facilitated the establishment of Diocesan commercial commercial projects and proposes the establishment of religious tourism schemes for religious growth.
Bishop Mwesigwa highlighted some challenges that require prompt response in the region that include high HIV prevalence, drunkardness, homicides and unhealthy lifestyle of many people in the area and thanked President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for supporting several development initiatives by church of Uganda including among others the construction of the Church House, Namugongo Martyrs Pilgrimage sites.
