Members of the Rotary Club of Kanungu have today, Sunday 30th August 2026, joined the rest of the country in the annual Rotary Cancer Run.
According to the Rotary Club of Kanungu Cancer Run Chair, Martin Atukwase Kafanta, the run aimed at raising funds to support the fight against cancer, build infrastructure, procure diagnostic equipment, increase access to treatment and create awareness against cancer.
The runners were flagged off by the former LC 5 Chairperson Kanungu District and Chief Runner, Rotarian Eng Sam Arinaitwe Kajojo at Kanungu View Hotel. The runners then proceeded through Kanungu Town up to Kanungu Main Stadium.
In his remarks, the President of the Rotary Club of Kanungu, Rotarian Joab Nyesiga, said Rotary Clubs in Uganda are united for the cause to raise Ugx 6 billion Uganda shillings to build a cancer treatment centre at Nsyambya Hospital, Kampala and noted that this will help to reduce the number of cancer patients who travel abroad to get cancer treatment.
Eng Arinaitwe Kajojo, thanked all the people who participated in the run and said that participants benefited from blood pressure checks and other health checks.

In an emotional moment, Eng Arinaitwe Kajojo shared his personal story and revealed that he lost his father and sister to cancer, and that is the reason why he joined the fight against cancer.
He commended members of the Rotary Club of Kanungu for their efforts, saying he hopes that in the next two years, they will have made a big step towards the Ugx 6 billion target.
Meanwhile, the Assistant District Health Officer of Kanungu, Rotarian Kato Besisira, urged residents to take cancer prevention seriously, saying cancer is claiming many lives because people come late for check-ups.
Besisira explained that cancer happens when we are exposed to certain conditions that make some body cells grow abnormally. He said these cells multiply in a way the body does not need, and at the end of the day, it results in cancer.
Besisira noted that some of the factors contributing to cancer include lack of physical exercise, smoking, and drinking too much alcohol, which makes body cells grow abnormally and also talked about cancer of the cervix, which is common among women and said today in Uganda there is a vaccine for cervical cancer.
Kato Besisira called upon all people of Kanungu District to avoid smoking, reduce alcohol, do regular exercises, and go to the nearest health facility for cancer screening before it is too late.
