In a significant political move, youth leaders from Rukungiri District, operating under the Rujumbura NRM Youth Network, have officially endorsed President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Minister of Security, Rtd. Maj. Gen. Jim Katugugu Muhwezi, to contest in the forthcoming 2026 general elections. This endorsement was announced during a press conference held on July 5 at the Rukungiri Inn Hotel, situated in the Eastern Division of Rukungiri Municipality.
The youth leaders expressed their unequivocal support for President Museveni, endorsing him for re-election as the President of Uganda. They also backed Minister Jim Muhwezi, who currently serves as the Member of Parliament for Rujumbura County, encouraging him to seek re-election for his parliamentary seat. This decision reflects a broader commitment to continuity and stability within the region.
Levi Tukundane, the Rukungiri District NRM Youth Coordinator, articulated the rationale behind their endorsement. During the press conference, Tukundane urged all youth within Rukungiri District to unite in support of both leaders. He underscored that their contributions have been vital in enhancing not only youth welfare but also the overall socio-economic development of the region. “It is essential for the youth to recognize the positive changes brought about by the NRM government. We must rally together to sustain this momentum,” he added.
The endorsement received enthusiastic backing from a number of other youth leaders present at the conference. Likewise, Dorothy Amutuheire, the Vice Chairperson from Rwerere Town Council, expressed her optimism about the future under the continued leadership of President Museveni and Minister Muhwezi.

She specifically mentioned initiatives such as the Youth Livelihood Program and the Parish Development Model that have actively engaged the youth and provided them with opportunities for personal and professional growth.
The Rujumbura NRM Youth Network’s endorsement is significant as it reflects the collective voice of the youth in Rukungiri District, who are increasingly aware of the political landscape and its implications for their future. The leaders’ commitment to promoting development and stability resonates with the youth, who are eager to see their leaders continue to champion policies that benefit their demographic.
As the 2026 elections approach, the backing of youth leaders is likely to play a crucial role in shaping the electoral outcomes in Rukungiri District and beyond. With a unified front, the Rujumbura NRM Youth Network aims to inspire a proactive approach among the youth, ensuring that their voices are heard and their interests are prioritized in the political discourse.
