Speaker Anitah Among Magogo

KAMPALA— Anita Annet Among has announced that she will not contest for the Speakership position in the 12th Parliament, in a statement addressing the public and her party leadership.

Among said the decision follows “wide consultations” and “deep introspection,” adding that it is aimed at sustaining harmony and clarity within the National Resistance Movement (NRM)—which she described as her “beloved party.”

She further stated that she is deeply grateful to H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the NRM party, and members of the 11th Parliament for granting her the opportunity to serve in top parliamentary leadership roles, including Deputy Speaker and Speaker.

The lawmaker also expressed appreciation to her family and friends, saying their solidarity and support over the past five years played a meaningful part in her service.

While withdrawing from the Speakership race, Among pledged her total support to candidates who will be endorsed by the President and the Party. She called on fellow Members of Parliament in the  12th Parliament to back the party-endorsed process and act in unity.

She said she will remain available to serve the country in whatever role the party leadership and the President may assign. In addition, Among indicated that she will continue cooperating with ongoing investigations being conducted by relevant state organs, with the intention of getting to the root of the allegations raised.

The statement ended with a reaffirmation of commitment to national duty: “FOR GOD AND MY COUNTRY.”

Anita Annet Among thus becomes the latest voice in the evolving leadership race, signaling a resolve to prioritize party cohesion and the orderly transition into the legislative term ahead.
