NEWS- The China Henan International Cooperation Group Company limited (CHICO) that is undertaking the construction of Ishasha- Kanungu –Rukungiri tarmac road recently gave out Christmas hampers to over 70 vulnerable families especially PWDs and the elderly in Kanungu and Rukungiri districts, those in Sub counties where the road passes.
The gifts included Rice, Maize flour and cooking oil where each person received 3litres of cooking oil, 10 Kgs of rice and maize flour as one way of celebrating Christmas with the local vulnerable people.
Hao Weidory on behalf of CHICO Company said they saw it as a good gesture to celebrate Christmas with the local people because they have supported them in different ways hence enabling the company to speed up the road construction process.
He said the road is almost in its final stage and soon will be handed over to the government though the works are still going on like around Kanungu and Kihihi town councils and Rukungiri municipality which will be done soon in early January .
Kanungu and Rukungiri district leaders who officiated the function who included, Rukungiri district Resident Commissioner Steven Nsubunga Bewayo, Kanungu district Speaker Frank Byaruhanga appreciated the donation given to the vulnerable people saying it’s good to consider such people because most of them even didn’t have what to feed their families this Christmas.
Frank Byaruhanga said the company has created employment opportunities for the local community ever since the road construction started in 2018 because some parents have been able to get money for livelihood.
They warned the beneficiaries against selling the food stuff given to them but instead share with their friends who are also in need rather than selling them to buy alcohol.
Some of the beneficiaries told our reporter that they had nothing to feed their families this Christmas but at least they will celebrate it well since they have received food stuff from the Chico Company.
However the district leaders asked all those people along the Rukungiri Kanungu road who have complaints to file them in Resident district commissioners’ offices so that they can be worked upon before handing over the road.
The project that started in 2018 is expected to be handed over in January 2024.
