NEWS– The Police in Rubanda District have registered a single fatal accident that took place at Rwarubaya village in Nyarurambi Parish in Muko Subcounty along Kabale – Kisoro Road.
Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate told journalists that the accident involved a Tata Truck registration number UAQ 111W whose driver was not immediately identified and is now on the run.
Maate identified the deceased persons as 36 year old Nkurunziza Nelson and Nsenga Gideon 27 both residents of Kabande village in Gitenderi Parish in Nyarusiza Sub-county, Kisoro district and Nsanzimuhire Micheal 26 year old resident of Nyagihenge village in Rukongi Parish also in Nyarusiza Sub county, Kisoro District all who died on spot.
Maate said that its reported that there are other victims who got serious injuries and were taken for treatment before the Police arrived at the scene.
It is alleged that the said motor vehicle was coming from Isingiro District heading to Kisoro District loaded with sacks of Irish potatoes, maize seeds and about four passengers on top of the Lorry when the accident took place in the wee hours of Monday morning.
Its reported that when the driver reached the sharp corners at Rwarubaya along Kabale -Kisoro Highway, he lost control while negotiating a sharp corner and hence overturned on the left hand side of the road where three passengers were covered by sacks of irish potatoes and die on spot and other three passengers survived with injuries.
Preliminary Police investigations have pointed the accident on poor mechanical condition of the Lorry which led to brake failure.
Maate said that the scene of the accident was visited by Rubanda District Traffic Officer Wakatuma Alamanzani assisted by Police Constable Kauli Bohanon and a Team from the Intergrated Highway Patrol Unit from Muko who retrieved the bodies of the deceased persons underneath sacks of irish potatoes, did Postmortem examination from the scene and handed over bodies to the relatives for descent burial.
The accident has been registered at Rubanda District Central Police Station under reference number TAR 012/2023 to help in investigations and the wreckage of the Lorry was towed to the Police Station awaiting Inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles.
