KAMPALA– The death toll in the Bombo road in Kigogwa-trading centre along Kampala-Bombo road in Kasangati, Wakiso district fuel tanker explosion incident has risen to 15.
The tragedy unfolded when a fuel tanker, registration number UAM 292Q, traveling from Kampala-Gulu, overturned after the driver lost control. Locals rushed to siphon fuel from the tanker, unaware of the impending danger.
Unfortunately, those who attempted to siphon fuel were the most affected, with nine adults and two minors dying at the scene, their bodies burnt beyond recognition.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, said 4 more have been reported to death.
Police records have indicated that 24 others sustained injuries, with 15 currently in Intensive Care Unit while 9are in good condition at Kirundu hospital.
Onyango explains that the Police are working to identify the deceased through DNA testing, and relatives are urged to come forward to assist in this process.
An investigation into the root cause of the incident is being done with the help of close circuit television-CCTV footages, while the hunt for the driver is still ongoing.
