The Police Fie Brigade and Rescue have rushed to the residence of the late Democratic Party President, Dr Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere in Rubaga, a Kampala suburb after a fire broke out burning the entire storied house.

The fire broke out today Friday afternoon and spread rapidly, despite efforts by local residents and the Police Fire Brigade and Rescue Service and left the entire neighborhood in shock.

One of the immediate neighbours identified as Ms Margaret Namaganda told our reporter that they heard a loud bang and as they moved out to find out what had happened, they saw smoke emanating from the house.

The Police Fire Brigade and Rescue team rushed to the scene to contain the fire as the neighbours tried to put out the fire using water and sand in vain and no injuries were reported.

The scene of the burning house has left deep emotion in the community, which remembers Dr Ssemogerere who also served as a Minister in different capacities as a humble and principled leader.

“He would always come out to greet people. That house wasn’t just bricks—it was history,”  Joeph Kalema who witnessed the debacle said.

Dr Ssemogerere died in 2022 at age 90 and played a big role in Uganda’s politics, leading the Democratic Party for over two decades and serving in multiple cabinet roles and his Rubaga home was long considered a symbol of political legacy and quiet leadership.
