Cow affected by foot and mouth disease

KAMPALA- The Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries have announced the lifting of Foot and Mouth disease quarantine restrictions in Rukungiri which takes immediate effect. 

According to a letter dated January 24th 2025 addressed to Rukungiri District Chief Administrative Officer and signed by the Commissioner of Animal Health Dr Anna Rose Ademun, the quarantine restrictions were imposed in April 2024 following the outbreak of the Foot and Mouth disease in Rukungiri District.

In her communication, Dr Ademun the restriction of movement of cattle, goat, sheep and their products through, to and from the district was imposed according to the Animal Act Cap.38.

She however said that on top of restricting livestock movements, the Ministry understood increased community awareness about the Foot and Mouth disease, carried out strategic vaccination in the affected Sub counties and a status report was carried out that confirmed that the disease has since been put under control.

The Commissioner for Animal Health Dr Ademun however asked the district authorities to ensure that all susceptible animals are vaccinated against Foot and Mouth disease to maintain a disease free status in the district.

The letter was copied to line Ministers of Agriculture and Animal Industry and Fisheries, the Permanent Secretary, the Assistant Commissioner of Veterinary Regulation and Enforcement, Assistant Commissioner of Disease Control, RDC Rukungiri, the Chairman LC 5 Rukungiri District, District Police Commander Rukungiri, District Veterinary Officer and Senior Veterinary Inspector for Western Uganda.
