NEWS– The Kanungu Deputy Resident District Commissioner Gad Ahimbisibwe Rugaju on Monday afternoon flagged off a team of athletes that have been selected to represent Kanungu District in the National Athletics that will take place in Kitgum District.

While speaking at the flagging off function at Kihihi Primary School in Kihihi Town Council, Deputy RDC Gad Rugaju called on the participants to make a team that will not only compete but also become Ambassadors of Kanungu District.

He asked the selected participants to hold their talent in high esteem because it’s a special gift from the Almighty God and will make them, their parents their schools and the District proud.

The team that is led by Kanungu District Sports Officer Robert Arinaitwe and Kanungu District Primary School Sports Association Chairperson Linus Tusingwire is composed of 14 athletes who include 7 boys and 7 girls and other 5 officials.

Arinaitwe said that the athletes were selected from the best participants during the District Atheletics Championship that took place last month at Rwere Playgrounds in Kirima Subcounty in Kanungu District and will participate in different categories that include short and long runs, high and long jump and one of the is a para Olympic participant who will represent the Persons With Disabilities.

Kanungu District Primary School Sports Association Chairman Linus Tusingwire asked the athletes to exhibit a high degree of discipline if they are to win medals and also represent the country at a higher level, while the Headteacher Kihihi Primary School Tukamushaba Rodgers reminded them that they will be representing the District and not their schools.

He however said that they are going to Kitgum District to compete and therefore should use all their energies to ensure that they emerge among the best athletes in the country.
