NEWS- The Police in Kasese district have launched investigations to ascertain the reasons why one of their own junior officers ended his life by shooting.
It is reported that on Friday, January 31st 2024 at around 11am while in the barracks in Kasese town, PC 75636 John Kanene, a Mugwere by tribe from Budaka district in Eastern Uganda shot himself dead for yet unknown reasons.
SP Luke Mbusa, the Rwenzori East Regional Community Liaisons Officer, has confirmed the development to Messiah Radio and said the deceased was attached to Kasese Division.
According to him, a team of counselors and investigators from police would be deployed to find out the reasons why the officer decided to kill himself.
The incident comes at a time when the Police are investigating a deadly shooting at Shumuk Aluminium Ltd in Nakawa Division on the evening of January 30, 2025, left three people dead, including the shooter.
Authorities are investigating the incident, which claimed the lives of two security guards before the perpetrator took his own life.
Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire said Emmanuel Machugayi, a security guard employed by Ryayo Security Group Ltd, fatally shot his colleagues, Ashiraf Kakyebezi, 21, and Stephen Owechi.
According to initial reports, Machugayi accessed a firearm from a fellow guard and opened fire without provocation.
After the attack, Machugayi fled but was soon surrounded by security forces. Rather than face capture, he turned the weapon on himself.
The Jinja Road Police Division responded swiftly and launched an investigation. Officers recovered three bodies, two rifles, and several cartridges as evidence.
The bodies were transported to Mulago KCCA Mortuary for postmortem examinations.
