MBARARA- The UPDF 2nd Infantry Division Public Information Officer, Major Kiconco Tabaro has issued a statement saying that the Uganda border security with Democratic Republic of Congo remains calm with all activities going on uninterrupted, tourism activities, farming and local trade on Ugandan side not affected by ongoing fighting on Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Major Kiconco Tabaro also said that dozens of heavy trucks that were on transit through Cyanika to Goma remain parked at Nyakabande in Kisoro waiting for the situation to normalize.
In a one page press release dated January 31st 2024, Maj Kiconco Tabaro said that the security forces along the Uganda border are vigilant and active to avoid possible infiltration by ADF criminals and ex-combantats who may disguise as refugees as district and local security committees continue to conduct security awareness campaigns along our border line.
However, Information available is that some suspected Ugandans who were on short and long term sentences at Munzenze in Goma escaped from prison.
He said that it is suspected that some of the escapees could have been criminals most likely ADF criminals and wanted to come back home as they all escaped when M23 took control of Goma town.
Maj Tabaro Kiconco Tabaro therefore called for heightened vigilance to avoid possible infiltration by suspected ADF criminals. Otherwise we will continue to monitor the situation very closely for the safety of our Country.
