In an interview with our reporter in his office, Najuna said it’s quite absurd that some people are sleeping in the lock ups which were gazetted for market vendors who operate during the day.

According to Najuna, the council had put up a toilet to help business people during the day but because people have turned these lockups as residential areas, there is poor disposal of faecal wastes since the toilet is distant from places where they reside illegally.

The town clerk added that some have resorted to defecating in polythene bags and later throwing them in areas surrounding the market and along the road.

He was responding to queries raised by some business operators and residents who told our reporter that the market toilets are in a sorry state and poor sanitation in areas around the market.

Bamwanjara Kwatampola who owns a banana plantation behind the market said his garden has become a garbage collection for faeces and women used sanitary pads.

Bamwanjara said that he fears that diseases such dysentery and cholera might arise in the area during this rainy season.

“We are really living in fear because the kind of dirtiness in the area may in future cause come along with a number of illnesses resulting from poor health and sanitation” Mr. Bamwanjara said.

Other residents who spoke to our reporter included Buryahika Edison a salon man, Namara Fortunate a bar owner among others all operating from the same place.
