NEWS– The estranged Busiki County Member of Parliament Hon Paul Akamba has been slapped with fresh charges related to defrauding of war loss compensation from cooperative unions alongside Hon Mudimi Wamakuyu and Michael Mawanda.
The Anti-Corruption Court presided over by Chief Magistrate Joan Aciro has cancelled Busiki County MP Paul Akamba bail she had granted last week, and committed him to the High Court over corruption and slapped him with fresh charges and advised him to apply for bail from there.
Hon Akamba had prayed for an extension of his bail pending the commencement of the trial at the High Court and while Chief State Attorney Jonathan Muwaganya did not object to the plea and the Magistrate Aciro chose to send the MP on remand to Luzira.
Hon Akamba was arrested together with fellow legislators who included Lwengo District Woman Member of Parliament Hob Cissy Namujju and Bunyole East Member of Parliament Hon Yusuf Mutembuli and the three were on June 12th 2024 charged with one count of corruption related to negotiating and receiving kickbacks in the Budget Process.
It should be remembered that on June 14th Magistrate Aciro gave Hon Akamba temporary freedom but sent Hon Namujju and Mutembuli back to prison, however, Akamba’s freedom lasted just seconds as he was violently rearrested by armed men and driven to an unknown location.
The re-arrest, considered a common nuisance by rights advocates, signalled that the State was not yet done with the Busiki Member of Parliament and what started as a small issue has now turned into a big concern that is drenching the legislator with abandon.
When Hon Akamba turned up at the Anti Corruption Magistrates Court today, he found fellow Members of Parliament, Hon Mudimi Wamakuyu and Michael Mawanda of Igara West waiting to be charged with him for allegedly defrauding cooperatives of billions of shillings in war loss compensations and they will appear in High Court when the court sets the date.
