NEWS– Members of Parliament on the Environment and Natural Resources Committee have assessed the operational status of Kabale Substation located in Rubanda District in Kigezi sub-region, as well as its impact on electricity distribution.
The Members of Parliament lauded the substation’s operation efficiency, which they note will significantly improve stability and reliability of power supply across Kigezi Sub-region and surrounding districts.
The Members commended the Ministry of Energy and the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) for the quality of work and timely delivery of the project.
Committee Chairperson, Hon Herbert Ariko called for strengthening of maintenance plans and ensuring regular technical audits to sustain optimal performance over time.
According to the site Manager Eng Julius Musinguzi, the 132 KV Sub Station at Karukara has been constructed by the consortium of CCC International Engineering Nigeria Ltd. and Guangxi Transmission and substation construction Co. Ltd. (CCC-GTSCC) Consortium and the Transmission Line will cover 88 kms as it is known as Mirama – Kabale Transmission Line.
The Sub Station at Hamuko and the Mirama – Kabale high voltage Transmission Line were commissioned by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on 12th February 2025.
The Hamuko, Kabale Substation in Rubanda District Electricity Project Transmission Line passes through Ntungamo, Rukiga, Kabale and Rubanda districts was financed by the Islamic Development Bank with a loan of US 83.75 million dollars under the oversight of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development.
During the commissioning in February, President Museveni noted that the high voltage power substation is aimed at boosting industrialization and job creation in this area.
According to the CEO of Uganda Electricity Transmission Company (UETCL) Joshua Karamagi, the completion of the project became a reality and thanked the collaboration with various stakeholders such as the Government of Uganda, the Islamic Development Bank, the local community and leadership and the contractor Colenco Consulting (Nigeria), CCC-GTSCC Consortium (Nigeria) and Ceylex Engineering PVT from Sri Lanka.
