President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Hon. John Chrysostom Muyingo, the Minister of State for Higher Education, as Acting Minister of Education and Sports.

In a statement issued through the Government of Uganda’s communication channels—State House / Department of Press and Public Relations, News & Information—the President said the appointment is meant to ensure continuity in the education and sports sector during a temporary leadership gap.

The Acting appointment comes in the absence of the substantive Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni, who also serves as the First Lady of Uganda. Janet Kataha Museveni has reportedly been out of the public eye since March of this year, prompting the need for an interim minister to oversee the ministry’s day-to-day operations and ongoing programs.

Under the arrangement announced by the presidency, John Chrysostom Muyingo will carry out the responsibilities of the Education and Sports ministry in an acting capacity. The government noted that the appointment is effective immediately, meaning Muyingo will begin serving as Acting Minister without delay.

The announcement is expected to reassure education stakeholders, including schools, universities, teachers, students, and education administrators, that the ministry will remain active and responsive even as the substantive minister remains unavailable from public duties.

Muyingo’s new role follows his current portfolio in higher education, where he has been involved in matters related to universities and other tertiary institutions. With his acting appointment, he is expected to coordinate policies and activities spanning both education and sports, areas that often require close collaboration across different government departments and agencies.

As Acting Minister of Education and Sports, Muyingo will be tasked with supporting implementation of national education priorities, as well as promoting initiatives that advance sports development in the country. His appointment also highlights the government’s approach to maintaining leadership stability within key public institutions.

The government further emphasized that the Acting appointment takes immediate effect, confirming that Muyingo’s authority to represent and manage the ministry will begin immediately upon announcement.

For now, the acting leadership is seen as a temporary measure, intended to bridge the period until the substantive Minister returns to her official duties.
