The Minister of Agriculture Animal industry and Fisheries Hon Frank Tumwebaze has disclosed that no cow or goat will be allowed to be sold to the public without proof of vaccination.

The Minister said that the Government has now subsidised the vaccination for the foot and mouth disease and every animal must be vaccinated against the disease.

This Follows ongoing concerns from the public in regard to the cost of vaccination against foot and mouth disease, and the government has explained that vaccination of animals will be at the cost of the farmer’s but at a subsidised price.

According to Minister Tumwebaze, cows are being vaccinated at Ugx 8,000 and goats at Ugx 4,000, and explained that said when the factory is finally built in Uganda, the price will drop substantially.

In the bid to implement the guiding payment for the Foot and Mouth Disease vaccine, Minister Tumwebaze explained that the policy guides farmers to pay online for the vaccine, noting that cases of indisciplined veterinary officers asking for cash payments have been reported to relevant authorities, for action.

He said that livestock farmers will be counting an extra saving after a factory to locally manufacture the foot and mouth disease (FMD) vaccine begins operations.

The Government of Uganda in partnership with Egypt are currently setting up a production plant of the vacciine that will help bring down the cost incurred by farmers to vaccinate their animals.
