KAMPALA- The National Resistance Movement Secretary General, Hon Richard Todwong has held a meeting with children of the NRM bushwar fighters at the NRM headquarters organized under their umbrella organisation, “The Uganda Military Children’s Network”.
The group revealed that their organization intends to preserve the legacy and promote the values of their parents who paid the ultimate sacrifice to liberate the country.
The Secretary-General commended the group for taking the initiative to organise themselves, emphasizing the importance of preserving the legacy of Uganda’s military forces and fostering unity among their ranks.
Hon Todwong assured the group that National Resistance Movement party would strive to maintain the core values that the liberators fought for.
”We cherish and hold in the highest regard the things that your parents fought for in the bush. We call on you to step forward as a new generation to keep the movement alive,” Todwong said.
He added, “We are not building a constituency of factions. We want a movement grounded in order and unity. Where consensus is possible, we encourage it. Where it’s not, we provide for internal democratic processes. The fact that you are stepping forward as a new generation shows that the movement is alive and forward-looking,”.
The group led by Ms Anyango Winnie Lokech, appealed to the National Resistance Movement Secretariat to fully involve them in the mobilization efforts for the party’s flag bearers and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
“We have 13 groups which we can actively mobilize to seek support for the NRM flag bearers and the President. Since we were not involved last time, this time round we seek to be actively involved. Amongst us, we have members who are seeking to contest leadership positions. We pledge to vigorously canvas for votes and support for the NRM in all our respective areas of jurisdiction,” Ms Lokech said.
The Director of External Affairs at the NRM Secretariat, Major Pollar Awich who also addressed the gathering, applauded the group’s decision to align with the NRM, warning against losing such potential to opposition parties.
“Wouldn’t it be a shame if our children were running to other parties like DP, UPC, or NUP?” he asked. “It is both fitting and commendable that you, children of the revolution, are stepping up to take on leadership within the party.” Major Awich said.
He emphasized that while change is inevitable in life and politics, the process of transition must follow the party’s values and structures.
“We live in a dynamic world, and change is the only constant. That is why we must prepare our own to take over responsibly and within our ranks.”
Major Awich noted that many of the veterans’ children are not only well-educated but also morally grounded and ready to lead.
