Ntungamo district, partners move to scale up Pediatric TB screening and treatment

‎Ntungamo district Councillors are on edge with veterinary authorities in containing the spread of foot and mouth disease that is threatening some parts of Ntungamo.

‎Councillors argued that some farmers their livelihoods depend on their livestocks and looking after their families but blamed the concerned authorities for not performing their duty instead they use the outbreak of the contagious disease to extort money from farmers and cattle traders.

‎The revelation was on yesterday 25th, February 2026 during Ntungamo council sitting at Ntungamo district council hall. ‎Tensions have particularly escalated in Itojo Sub-county, where some large-scale livestock keepers have refused vaccination.

‎District Councillor Denis Muhumuza Savimbi warned that in Itojo some people have over 200 animals but have failed to vaccinate yet they are threatening the district veterinary officer, there must be penalties because they are also like other farmers who are heeding to the vaccination program.

‎According to Dr. Yake Basulira the district veterinary officer said they got challenges with Foot and Mouth disease by the end of last year in Nyakyera Sub County, they collected samples from the area and sent to the ministry for laboratory test and it was confirmed there was the contagious disease foot and mouth disease.

‎He added that they immediately formed the task force teams to implement the fight against the spread of foot and mouth disease, currently Nyakyera Sub County and Rushenyi county are still a prone areas for the contagious disease in livestocks.

‎Dr Basulira also said that the disease spilled to Rushenyi county in areas of Rukiri I, Rukiri II and Kaina in Rwentobo Rwahi town council, they also managed to get samples and taken to the ministry of national referral laboratories of Nadic.

‎In response, district officials suspended cattle markets and established quarantine checkpoints across the district.

‎Dr Basulira said containment measures were put in place immediately after confirming the outbreak of the contagious disease.
