RUKUNGIRI- The Nurses and midwives in Uganda under their umbrella Uganda Nurses and midwives Union have been hailed for being a formidable force that restores people’s health to normalcy from day to day.
This was on Friday, 17th May, 2024 sounded by the president of Uganda HE. Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in his speech delivered by the Vice President HE. Maj. Gen Jessica Epel Alupo during the commemoration of the international day of Nurses and midwives held in Rukungiri main stadium, Rukungiri municipality.
In his message, President Museveni revealed that nurses and midwives always risk their lives at the stations of duty and opt to save other people’s lives stressing that they are a critical force in health care delivery in the country and the world at large.
He commended them for their role and contribution in the multiplication and existence of human beings saying that they are change makers and worth recognizing not just in a single day but countless recognition on a daily basis.
The fountain of honor noted the increase in live birth and significant decline in infant mortality rate as per statistics in 2022 which he attributed the effort of nurses and midwives.
President Museveni applauded the nurses and midwives for having expressed their knowledge of illness, exceptional and professional skills to provide comfort to the patients.
He commended that medical fraternity for their role and their great performance for years to improve and heal the lives of Ugandans.
Mr. Justus Cherop Kiplangat , the President Uganda nurses and midwives Union highlighted the challenges faced by nurses and midwives in their day to day activities citing little salary, poor or no housing at the health facilities, little finding in the health sector, high taxation on health equipment among others.
Cherop Kiplangat sounded a need to centralize the health sector saying that its very hard for nurses and midwives to easily access jobs and acquire promotions at the district level.
In attendance were health leaders from Uganda, Kenya, Burindi, representatives from the USA, area members of Parliament, district officials from Rukungiri and other districts in Uganda among many others.
The international day of Nurses and midwives 2024 was celebrated under the theme ” our nurses, our future. The economic power of care”.
