New Inspector General of Police Abbasi Byakagaba

NEWS- President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed former Director of Counter Terrorism at Uganda Police Force, Abbas Byakagaba, as the new Inspector General of Police to replace Martin Okoth-Ochola and will be deputised by Assistant Inspector General of Police James Ochaya, who replaces Maj Gen Geoffrey Katsigazi who is likely to be redeployed back in the UPDF.

The Deputy Presidential Press Secretary Faruk Kirunda confirmed that the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces has appointed Abbas Byakagaba as the new Inspector General of Police replacing IGP Martin Okoth Ochola which will effect changes have been effected in the Uganda Police Force.

The new Inspector General ofPolice, Byakagaba, retired from the Police Force in March at the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police and handed over to Senior Commissioner of Police Frank Mwesigwa.

As director for Counter terrorism, Byakagaba has been part of the operations targeting ADF terrorist cells in several parts of the country and the arrest of suspects involved in these criminal activities.

Byakagaba is also among the few Police Directors with specialized training and his specialty is in counter terrorism from the US, which gives him edge over others due to the experience and knowledge acquired over many years in the field.

The new Deputy IGP James Ocaya who joined the Police in 1995 after graduating from Makerere University as a Police Cadet, has risen through Police ranks and was heading the Police Directorate Research and Planning to replace Maj Gen Geoffrey Katsigazi, whose contract with the Police was supposed to end this month.

According to a statement issued by the Police Spokesman Fred Enanga other changes in the Uganda Police Force include Kaali Ali Fahdi who was transferred to the Directorate of Fire Prevention and Rescue Services as the Director, John Nuwagira who was transferred to Field Force Unit as the commander, Hadijah Namutebi was moved from the Chief Political Commissariat to the Directorate of Welfare, Ubaldo Bamunoba who is replacing Hadijah Namutebi and Frank Mwesigwa who was appointed the Director of Operations in the Uganda Police.
