Karoli Lwanga Hospital Nyakibale

NEWS- The Police in Rukungiri district have arrested a woman on allegations of stealing a newly born baby from Kalori Lwanga Hospital Nyakibale.

The suspect is Jackline Natukunda, a daughter of Kanyaruju and a resident of Kyamakanda Buyanja in Rukungiri District, southwestern Uganda.

The barbaric act happened on Monday, December 4th 2023 at around 2:00pm when Mercy Turyahebwa a resident of Kyabahanga, in Bwambara sub county Rukungiri district left her one week old baby in a ward where she had given birth.

Information obtained from the hospital indicates that Turyahebwa had gone for a short call and on coming back, she met the suspect she didn’t know carrying her baby from the ward.

Its further said that Turyahebwa who had given birth a week ago was organising to clear the hospital bills to go home by the time the incident happened.

In an interview with our reporter, the suspect, Jackline Natukunda, noted that it was not her intention to steal the baby, noting that she was just holding her waiting for the mother since the baby had started crying.

Catherine Natukunda, the in charge maternity ward at Kalori Lwanga hospital Nyakibale confirmed this news, noting that the suspect sneaked into the ward where this woman has been.

Natukunda explained being in preparations to leave the hospital, Tuhaheebwa was in a separate ward awaiting discharge noting that the suspect then used this chance to steal the baby.

The in Charge explained to this reporter that this has never happened at Kalori Lwanga hospital Nyakibale adding that the suspect has been handed over to the Police for further management of her case.
