The Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Jacob Marksons Oboth has reassured National Private Educational Institutions Association–Uganda (NPEIA) that he will join them at the Regional Education Conference scheduled for 10th December 2026 in order to know them better and appreciate their contribution to our education sector.

Rt Hon Oboth made the assurance yesterday November 4th during an engagement with the National Private Educational Institutions Association–Uganda which took place at the Speaker’s Chambers at Parliament.

The delegation was led by Igara East Member of Parliament Hon Micheal Mawanda and the Association’s Executive raised pertinent issues about the status of private schools across the country.

During the meeting, the Speaker of Parliament observed that private schools may be privately owned, but they offer a public service that complements government efforts on the Education system ands the transformation of the economy and supporting communities where they are located.

“They run all our nursery schools, 73% of primary schools and 75% of secondary schools, and employ over 187,000 teachers. I cannot imagine Uganda’s education without them,” Speaker Oboth commented.

Speaker Oboth said that he was impressed that the proprietors of private owned schools were not asking for handouts, butwere asking for a fair and predictable tax regime.

He disclosed that he supported their call for a harmonised, single-tax system that ends the overlap between central and local government levies and pledged that Parliament will carefully examine their proposals, including affordable credit through Uganda Development Bank.

Speaker Oboth also asked the National Private Educational Institutions Association–Uganda to partner with the government in understanding why so many children drop out of primary school and pledged to build a stronger education system for every Ugandan child.
