Kigezi Region Police PRO ASP Elly Maate

The Police in Rubanda District are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a 26 year old man identified as Gilbert Ayebare a resident of Habuhinga village in Ikamiro Parish in Muko Sub-county who allegedly got unconscious while in the Police custody and was pronounced dead on arrival at Kabale Referral Hospital.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate has confirmed the incident saying that it is alleged that Ayebare had been arrested over theft of a mobile phone from Ninsiima Ronnah, after it was given to him by one Tashobya Avitus, who is Ninsiima’s son who picked it from the house.

It ì reported that the complainant went to Ayebare and requested for her mobile phone but in vain and she went and reported the matter to the area LC1 chairperson who advised her to report to Muko Police Station. 

When Ninsiima reported, Ayebare was reportedly escorted by the community and detained at Muko Police Station on charges of theft and was transferred to Rubanda Central Police Station for further management, and his fellow suspects called the cells guard  that one of them was not feeling well. 

The cells guard then informed the OC Station and the suspect was removed from the cells and rushed to Muko General Hospital from where he was reportedly referred to Kabale regional referral Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. 

Maate said that casefile has been opened to investigate the circumstances under which he was found unconscious in the cells before his death and the deceased’s body was conveyed to Kabale hospital Mortuary for Postmortem to acertain the cause of his death as investigations continue.
