NEWS– The Police in Rukiga district are hunting for a group of people involved in assaulting a suspected cow thief who died after being transported to the hospital in Nyamihanga cell, Karorwa parish, Bukinda sub-county, Rukiga district.
The deceased, 22-year-old Isaac Niwenshaba, a resident of Kiruhira in Kashekye Parish, Kamwezi Sub County in Rukiga district, was reportedly found on December 31, 2023, around 8pm in Nyamihanga cell, Karorwa parish, Bukinda sub-county, with others allegedly in possession of stolen cows.
ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, stated that a mob attacked Niwenshaba, leaving him in coma while his associates managed to escape.
Niwenshaba was urgently taken to Kamwezi Health Center IV where he tragically passed away at around 11:30 pm. The police were notified, and they visited the scene, documented it, conducted a postmortem at Kamwezi Health Center IV and handed the body to relatives for burial.
Police said that inquiries are ongoing into this case of mob justice as the incident has been recorded at Rukiga District Police Station under reference number CRB 525/2023.
