The Police in Kanungu District have arrested a 28-year-old private Security Guard identified as Hillary Byaruhanga who is accused of murdering businessman Anthony Mutinisa, the proprietor of Mutinisa Motors Uganda in Kampala.
The suspect, Byaruhanga was attached to Don World Security Limited is alleged to have shot Mutinisa dead on Sunday evening before fleeing the scene with the victim’s vehicle, registration number UA 769 BQ.
The deceased, Anthony Mutinisa, 53, was the proprietor of Mutinisa Motors. Byaruhanga had been on the run since Sunday but was tracked down and arrested on Monday in Kanungu District, near the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) border, where he had been hiding.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed the arrest and revealed that Byaruhanga was captured alongside Mark Akampa, whose role in the crime is still under investigation. Authorities believe the arrest of both suspects will provide critical leads into the motive behind the killing.
Preliminary investigations show that after killing his boss, Byaruhanga disabled the company’s CCTV system by removing video footage, stole an undisclosed amount of money, and fled in Mutinisa’s latest Toyota Land Cruiser V8 SUV.
Colleagues told police that Byaruhanga had not only been on Don World Security’s payroll but also received a separate salary directly from Mutinisa. He had been entrusted with company errands, trained in driving, and granted access to sensitive operations—facts that cast doubt on speculation that the murder stemmed from workplace mistreatment.
Following the incident, Byaruhanga allegedly sent chilling text messages to company staff and his supervisor at Don World Security, writing: “Something bad has happened.”
The stolen SUV was later tracked to Kanungu, sparking fears that the fugitive intended to cross into Congo. Military intelligence has since joined police in piecing together Byaruhanga’s movements and communications to establish whether he acted alone or as part of a wider criminal plan.
Rusoke confirmed the arrest, revealing that the stolen vehicle was later recovered in Rutwe Cell in Kihihi Town Council in Kanungu District.
Kituuma Rusoke further disclosed that Byaruhanga was apprehended alongside an accomplice, Akampa Mark, who has also been taken into custody as investigations continue.
