NEWS– Members of Kigezi Regional Youths’ Parliament have launched their Kavera/plastic free region campaign by cleaning Kihihi Town in Kanungu District by disposing off Kavera and plastic trash.
The voluntary based activity was conducted under the theme: “Being part of the solution not the pollution: A Kavera/Plastic Free Region is my role” led by their President Baryaba Tonny Kareju who expressed their commitment to end Environmental pollution which has become an urgent global concern.
The Deputy Prime Minister Kigezi Regional Youths’ Parliament Ms Zeridah Kagonyera said that they have taken proactive decision to clean up Kihihi Town Council and the campaign would be sustained if the Community members cooperate with them by following the waste disposal protocols.
Ms Gracious Karekyezi who is the Clerk to Parliament of Kigezi Regional Youth Parliament used the chance to educate the community some of the waste disposal protocols including the 5R refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle.
When asked about the motivation behind their innovative, the Speaker of the group, Nsabimaana Davis said that as youths, they have realized the burden of correcting the past mistakes done by their elders and committed themselves not to repeat their mistakes after noticing some of the warning signs of Climate Injustice wondering how their future would be if no proactive action is taken.
Nsabimaana explained that if the trend of plastic disposal continues with no urgent action, the water bodies would be containing more plastics than fish by 2050and called upon Government, NGOs, Religious Leaders, Academia and Education Institutions, Business Community the Media and Citizens to pay attention to this campaign.
