The Uganda Prisons Service has completed the construction of a new female prisoners’ ward at Luzira Women Prison, marking a major leap in efforts to reduce congestion and enhance service delivery and the one-floor storied facility, now fully complete and awaiting commissioning, has the capacity to accommodate 350 inmates under modern, secure and dignified conditions.
The ward is fitted with first-class sanitary installations, sufficient ventilation, wide circulation space and well-arranged bed units to ensure comfort and orderly accommodation and other features include washing and private bathing facilities, and lighting systems designed to suit women as a special category of inmates.
These improvements reflect the service’s commitment to meeting the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, which emphasize the need for gender-appropriate facilities and humane living standards.
The facility was built by the Prisons Engineering Gang using locally mobilized materials and is part of the broader low-cost housing strategy developed by the Commissioner General of Prisons as directed by the President to promotes self-reliance, cost efficiency and the use of internal technical capacity to deliver quality infrastructure across the country.
The completion of the Luzira women’s ward adds to the impressive infrastructural momentum that Uganda Prisons Service has registered over the past five years as several major projects have been completed or are underway in various regions, contributing significantly to reduced congestion, improved welfare and enhanced operational performance.
