The UPDF Engineering Brigade yesterday  handed over Bufundi Health Centre III in Bufundi Sub-county, Rubanda West, upon completion at a cost of over Shs600 million.

The District Engineer revealed the scope of work done, which included construction of the inpatient ward, maternity ward, walkway and the theatre.

Speaking during the handover, health workers led by the facility in-charge said the available water tanks are not enough to serve patients. The facility currently has 32 health workers and receives about 1,350 patients monthly, which they said is inadequate for the growing patient load.

Bufundi Sub-county LC5 Councilor Hon. Sam   challenged residents to own the newly tiled facility and ensure that no glass is broken. He backed management’s call for more water tanks and health workers, challenged leaders to find a permanent solution to water scarcity in the area, and lobbied for more support to health centres in the sub-county.

Rubanda District LC5 Vice Chairperson Kesaphari Prossy commended government and UPDF for the facility, saying it will improve maternal health and reduce referrals. She supported the request for additional staff and water storage, noting that improved infrastructure must be matched with human resource to handle the 1,350 monthly patients.

Rubanda District LC5 Chairperson Ampeire Stephen Kasyaba said the district is fighting tooth and nail to have Bufundi Health Centre III elevated to Health Centre IV.

Kasyaba noted that Rubanda District is staffed at 70%, the best in Kigezi sub-region, adding that Bufundi will now be referring patients to the district general hospital. He cited success stories of safe deliveries at the district general hospital.

He lauded President Museveni for appointing Hon. Henry Musasizi as Minister of Finance, saying Musasizi lobbied the funds UPDF is using to construct health facilities in Rubanda.

Rubanda District Chief Administrative Officer Samuel Ahabwe thanked Government, Hon. Musasizi, and UPDF Engineering Brigade for the project.

“Special appreciation goes to the Honourable Minister of Finance and the district leadership for their tireless efforts in lobbying and advocating for resources,” Ahabwe said, urging the health department to ensure the facility is staffed, stocked with essential medicines and equipped.

Capt. Yunus Ntegeka, the Western Region MDAs Project Manager representing UPDF Engineering Brigade, pledged quality and timely execution of all UPDF projects.
