Uganda has suspended all defence and military cooperation with Türkiye, escalating a diplomatic row that has been building for months over a range of security and political disagreements.

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces announced the decision today saying the suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in place until outstanding issues between the two countries are resolved.

While announcing the development, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information, Col Chris Magezi, said that the Uganda People’s Defence Forces has with immediate effect suspended all and any Defence and Military cooperation with the Republic of Türkiye, but did not disclose the issues behind the decision.

The announcement followed a week of renewed confrontation between Kampala and Ankara, including a demonstration organised by supporters of the Patriotic League of Uganda outside the Turkish Embassy in Kampala yesterday.

The protesters demanded that Türkiye hand over Ugandan social media activist Fred Kajubi Lumbuye, who has been living in Türkiye and has repeatedly criticised Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the UPDF Chief of Defence Forces and PLU leader.

Lumbuye has been a particular source of anger for Gen Muhoozi, who has repeatedly accused Türkiye of shielding the blogger from Ugandan authorities.
