NEWS– The Rubanda District Acting Resident Commissioner, Eric Ssewandingi, on Monday arrested five officials in Rubanda district accused of extorting money from Parish Development Model PDM beneficiaries. The arrested officials are from Ikumba Sub-county and Nshanjare Town Council, all in Rubanda district.

The arrested individuals are Tumwesigye Lius, Atuheire Unique, Tumwesigye Gerald, Ahimbisibwe Elia, and Mwesigye Justus. They are suspected of extorting between Ugx 50,000-100,000 from PDM beneficiaries.

Speaking to our reporter after the exercise, Ssewandigi said that he managed to arrest and recover money worth Ugx 2.5 million in Nshanjare Town Council from Tumwesigye Justus, the secretary for PDC Nshanjare Town Council; Arineitwe Ezera, chairperson for Loans; and Tumwesigye Gerald, the chairperson for PDM Committee Sacco for Nshanjare Town Council.

Ssewandingi added that the above individuals were collecting Ugx 50,000 from each parish Development Model beneficiary. He said he acted after receiving a public outcry.

The RDC further proceeded to Ikumba Sub-county, where he managed to arrest Tumwesigye Elius, chairperson of the Ikumba Parish Development Model, and Atuheire Unique, treasurer of the Ikumba Parish Development Model. 

Ssewandigi told the press that the two charged Ugx 50,000-100,000 from over 15 beneficiaries who testified. Ssewandigi vowed to arrest whoever got involved in extortion in the PDM Program.

Some of the PDM beneficiaries, including Biryomumeisho Marizon, Owoyesigire Yared, Abaho Anita, and Jascenta Kagasangira, among others, openly accused the arrested individuals of forcing them to pay a bribe of between Ugx 50,000-100,000 to benefit under this government program.
