NEWS- The Uganda Police Force department of traffic has confirmed that a tragic road accident on the Jinja-Iganga highway in Mayuge District has claimed seven lives.
Michael Kananura, the Traffic Police Spokesperson revealed that the crash occurred early Monday morning (16th December 2024) in Bulamba village when a Toyota Hiace taxi, heading from Iganga to Jinja, collided with an oncoming Fuso truck during a failed overtaking attempt.
According to him, four people, including passengers in the taxi and the Fuso truck’s co-driver, died on the spot while three others, who were critically injured and rushed to Iganga Hospital, later succumbed to their injuries.
Addressing the media in Kampala, police cautioned the public against reckless overtaking, particularly at night, which has become a major contributor to road fatalities. Both drivers involved in the accident reportedly fled the scene, and investigations are underway.
Road Safety Concerns Ahead of the Festive Season
Police also disclosed ongoing operations targeting road safety violations. Over the past week, they impounded 490 vehicles with dangerous mechanical conditions, arrested 117 drivers for reckless driving, and detained 940 motorcyclists without valid licenses.
Ahead of the festive season, traffic authorities issued warnings to motorists to comply with regulations, including carrying valid driving licenses, adhering to speed limits, avoiding overtaking in hazardous areas, and refraining from using phones while driving.
“Ensure proper use of seat belts, wear safety helmets, and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Non-compliance will lead to arrests and further legal action,” police stressed.
Traffic police also pledged to enhance enforcement against reckless driving, conduct public education campaigns, and inspect vehicle roadworthiness in collaboration with stakeholders.
