The community of the University of St Joseph’s Mbarara is in shock following the suspected murder of a first-year student, Jackline Tumwebaze, at her rented home in Mbarara City.
Jackline, who was enrolled in the university’s weekend Bachelor of Accounting and Finance program, was discovered deceased in her room located in the Katete suburb of Nyamitanga Division.
In a statement shared on its official X account on Thursday, the university confirmed the tragic news, stating that she had been killed by unknown assailants and was found locked inside her residence.
Born on January 28, 1998, Tumwebaze hailed from Kininga-Mushana Parish in Buhunga Sub-county, Buhweju District. University official Eugene Nuwamnanya stated that they are collaborating with her family and local police to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.
A relative, Justus Tukamushaba, reported that the family last communicated with her on Monday morning. By Tuesday, both of her mobile phones were turned off. Concerned, he went to check on her and found her house locked. After finding a key, he entered and was met with a strong smell, which led him to discover her body inside.
Local authorities were notified, and the body was subsequently transported to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Family members noted that most of her belongings remained in the house, although her mobile phones were missing. Jackline managed to balance her studies over the weekend with running a small business during the week.
Rwizi regional police spokesperson, Samson Kasasira, mentioned that he had yet to receive complete details regarding the case.
This tragic event follows closely on the heels of another incident, where a Bishop Stuart University student was found dead under mysterious circumstances. The university expressed its condolences on their official X-handle, lamenting the loss of Namara Comfort, who was pursuing a Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management.
“Our thoughts are with her family, friends, classmates, and all who knew her. May her soul rest in eternal peace.”
