The Inspectorate of Government is calling for increased public participation in the fight against corruption and urged all citizens, civil society organizations, the media, and public officers to take an active role in promoting accountability and transparency.
The call was made by the Assistant Director of Advocacy at the Inspectorate of Government, Ms Christine Lamwaka who said that involving different stakeholders in their respective capacities will help extend the anti-corruption campaign to communities that government institutions may not easily reach.
Ms Lamwaka made these remarks during a meeting with local officials and leaders in Kasese District as part of an anti-corruption and sensitization campaign by the Inspectorate of Government.
Ms Lamwaka made it categorically clear that fighting corruption requires collective responsibility and active involvement from all sections of society which needs broader public participation by strengthening accountability and extending anti-corruption efforts to grassroots communities.
Ms Lamwaka urged Ugandans to actively monitor government programs, report suspected corruption, and speak out against the misuse of public resources.
She asked Civil Society Organisations as stakeholders to bridge the gap and reach local populations that official government bodies find difficult to access directly.
She also asked the Media to amplify awareness campaigns, promote transparency and hold public officers accountable in the fight against corruption.
Ms Lamwaka reminded the Public Officers and Local Leaders to uphold integrity, reject bribery and nepotism, and improve service delivery and encouraged Youth Leaders to track local development initiatives and report gaps or graft directly to the Inspectorate of Government.
The Inspectorate of Government has backed regional anti-corruption drives led by officials such as Minister of State for Local Government Dr Balaam Barugahara, investigated field complaints and are working with local councils in the fight against corruption.
The IGG also continues to train local government council leaders and trainers to embed transparency and ethical standards in public budgets and expenditures as part of capacity building component.
