Chairperson irish potato farmers

NEWS- The Kigezi regional potato organization chairperson Fidel Kimari has asked the government to establish modern standard stores for potato farmers.

This comes when Irish potato time for harvesting reaches in the middle to welcome the first growing season of this year 2024.

Kamari who is the chairperson of  Kisoro district potato growers cooperative union company that is made of 12 cooperatives in the district revealed that 90% of Kisoro and Kigezi residents engage in growing Irish some for home consumption, otherS for sale.

Most farmers have lost their seeds during storage period because of poor storages they possess thus requesting the government to usher in a hand. He added that farmers should clean where they keep their seeds after harvesting, especially at raised racers that have enough air to keep the Irish in normal conditions adding that it’s through poor storage and lack of agricultural equipment that farmers lose money.

Kigezi is the first among the four regions that comprises Uganda national potato organization that is Kigezi region, Rwenzori, Mt Elgon and west Nile. Farmers have yielded more seed from Dutch that is more beneficial to farmers according to Kamari and currently farmers in Kigezi are in need of training and workshops on how to practice modern methods of farming and storage which can increase commercialization and addition and security of food in the urban cities and rural areas.  

The vice chairperson of Nyakabande potato growers Nsaba Pangalasi urged the farmers to always clean potatoes before taking them to stores. He added requesting people to join cooperatives available in their societies that will lead the access better seeds, especially bought by the organization from abroad.
